Holmes Reboot – Excellent!

For the past few weeks, on our Talkcasts, we have been talking about the BBC re-adaptation of Sherlock Holmes and how awesome it was. Here’s the good news. It debuted in the US last weekend at the New York Comicon to wild enthusiasm. The crowd loved the Steven Moffat special feature discussion about how the modern day adaptation came about and they were stunned by the glimpses of the first episode.

Now for the even better news, the show will be available in the US in 2 different ways.  It will be broadcast on PBS as part of Masterpiece Theater, beginning on Oct. 24th. It will ALSO be available on DVD with a slew of goodies.

Things to remember about this series:  It has the quirkiness of the BBC, in that the writing is spectacular, the acting is so wonderfully eccentric and the camera work and editing are nothing short of superb. Oh, and btw, a second season has been announced. More info available here and here. (Thanks to io9)

This is Dome sayin’:  I like this a lot.

The Two Words I have Always Longed to Say:

Cassandra Peterson

God, I love her. She is iconic and more than a … passing fantasy. When the crew toured Spooky World last week, all kept hearing in my minds eyes was her saucy voice, whispering things to me. I miss you Elvira. I miss your haunted hills, I miss your sly comments. And now, I shall miss you no more. In syndication this week in over 100 markets across the ole’ US of A:  Elvira’s Movie Macabre. A full listing of markets and times can be found here(thanks to our friends at Shock till you Drop). When you watch it, check out the theme, written and produced by Jack White, of The White Stripes. My fevered brain can barely contain my rampant enthusiasm for such wonderful viewing and “aural” pleasures and my partner in crime, Illustrator X…well, let’s just say..his tell tale heart is a’ pounding away..

This is the Dome, sayin’: Cassandra, Elvira, be mine. I pledge you my ……….

TBBT/FTW

If there was ever a show that defines geekdom, it is The Big Bang Theory. From the quiet OCD certitude of Sheldon Cooper to the sexual dynamo of Penny, this show, now going into season four, is one of the most endearing and genuinely funny shows on network TV. Last season evil Wil Wheaton made appearances as well as Stan Lee. As more and more of us geeks watch, more of geekdom’s idols are appearing. It was announced today that Katee Sackhoff, Steve Wozniak, George Takei and Eliza Dushku are all making appearances this season on the show!

Abe, I’d like you to meet…Snow White

In a mostly underwhelming summer of film, pockmarked with the occasional Inception and Strutting Leo Internet Meme, there are two blips on the radar that should be of interest to the Sci-Fi and Fantasy community.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Book optioned by Tim Burton (Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride) and Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch).  Pre-production has begun with Burton producing and Bekmambetov directing. For those unfamiliar, Abe’s mom is killed by vampires and the Civil War is a thinly disguised vampire hunt.

Snow White and the Huntsman

This reimagining written by Evan Daughetry and produced by Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland). Currently attached to direct is Rupert Sanders (The Hunger Games) This version, one of four currently in pre-production,  is not to be confused with the Disney reboot. Entitled Snow White and the 7,  the Fair Maiden is within the world of The Shaolin Monks, who train the hapless heroine to fight evil.

This is Dome, sayin’: IMHO, I prefer Strutting Leo.

Waldo Redux

In 1942 Bob Heinlein wrote a novella called Waldo, not as in “where the hell is he”, but more along the lines of a mechanical genius exiled from humanity. The protagonist, Waldo Farnsworth-Jones suffers from Myasthenia Gravis (MG)  and becomes the penultimate inventor devising mechanical devices to overcome the shortcomings of his ravaged body. His main device is a “waldoe” in essence a mechanical hand, which he uses, much as we use our arms. Flash forward to 1950 when this was published as a collection with another novella, Magic, Inc. As with most of the “inventions” of Heinlein, the scientific community looked and began to see its feasibility and adapt it to technology. Work in neurobiology, genetic splicing, and radioactive research would be impossible without the use of a waldoe. The concept of the comic book Iron Man (1963) and exo-skeleton research for use in both military and industrial applications is all based on this one simple novella from 1940.

In the words of Ben Bova, “Science Fiction is history that is yet to happen.” A mere 70 years later we have practical applications in both research and industry using the basic designs Heinlein gave us in that novella. This past week, Raytheon announced that the XOS 2, a wearable robotics suit using 50% less power than its predecessor and much more ruggedized to environmental variances.

TERRORTHON returns to Somerville!!

I’m telling you, New England has become a modern-day mecca for horror hounds!  I mean, we’re already the home turf for SpookyWorld/Nightmare New England (and yes, Sci Fi Saturday Night will be there this Saturday Sept.25th just prior to showtime — will we see you?).  We’ve got local scary celebs like Stephen King, Joe Hill, Stephen R. Bissette and our own deliciously desirable Dead RedHead.  Our fiends friends at Saturday Fright Special keep the scares coming every weekend… and the Rock & Shock Festival is about to bring Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie to the area!  As if that weren’t enough to make you crawl back into your coffin, it’s time once again for TERRORTHON!!!

Terrorthon looks to be a great time, it’s affiliated with SpookyWorld, and runs from Sept. 24-Oct. 2 at the historic Somerville Theatre in Somerville, MA. A schedule/list of attractions is available on the Terrothon website , and directions/ticketing info are available through the theater’s website. One of the films just happens to be Dead Snow, which was favorably reviewed by our very own Dead RedHead here on the SFSN blog. The festival also includes several  films by local artists, so who knows? Maybe the next great New England horror legend will be there… Don’t miss out!

Letting My Geek Flag Fly

Sure, I ain’t no Mickey Mantle, didn’t hit no 3 zillion home runs, BUT I do know the proper way to defrag a hard drive and have watched every frackin’ episode of Wondefalls. In celebration of ME and every other less than perfect physical specimen among us who ever attended an LAN party, played an RPG, knows what ZORK is or cares which inker did the best with Professor X, I am proud to present Geek a Week Trading Cards. The collectible for those of us who may never have a tan, or in my case do own multiple Harley Quinn Barbie Dolls. The brain child of self described geek artist Len Peralta, his website is both funny and quite funny as well as sometimes very funny. The upshot is a very funny and enlightening series from a very imaginative artist and geek

This is Dome sayin’:  Can I have that picture of Katie Sackoff?
