TalkCast 106 – A First Look at Boston ComicCon 2012

Our guest is long time friend of the show, Bob Shaw: the man behind Comic Art House, and one of the coordinators of Boston ComicCon. Tonight he brings us the first official news about this event. One of the biggest additions to the show is an original art auction, the sole purpose of which is to help defray the rising costs of a quickly expanding convention. We also discussed part of the list of confirmed guests. Boston Comic Con will be held on April 21-22 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston.

Blood Feud by Steven Roman – A Book Review

The Saga of Pandora Zwieback

Everything you know is wrong. Thus is the life of Pandora, a delusional goth teen with severe antisocial tendencies and a history of  paranoid visions. She is exiled to upstate New York with her mother and estranged from her father,  the curator of Renfield’s House of Horrors, a NYC Paranormal Museum. Pan searches for not who she is but what she is. An errant tasering begins unlocking the keys to what she is and the role she plays in a world that lives just under the collective subconscious.

OK, so having just reread the above paragraph I know it sounds a bit disjointed and incoherent. So is Pan. That’s why she has Sabastienne, the 400-year-old protectress of the universe. This unlikely paring makes for one of the most wondrous duos ever to grace the pages of a Paranormal Buddy Story. Equal parts Sorcerer’s Apprentice and 48 Hours, this is a mystic rollercoaster ride that glimpses a demonic past and uncertain future in the hands of two unlikely women who the fates have pared. TalkCast 105 – Tricks and Treats

Fiction Friday – Robert Sheckley, Tell me something funny.

Robert Sheckley

Robert Sheckley was one of the few science fiction writers to have a true sense of humor that translated into his work. A multiple Hugo and Nebula nominee, he was best known for his absurdist outlook and his stories were uniformly wry with a futuristic bent. His fan peers included Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman, and Harlan Ellison.

This story, “Bad Medicine”, is a fan favorite. It’s the story of a man being treated by a psychotherapy machine intended for…

Another Rockin’ Rock and Shock

October always brings a shiver of anticipation to my graveyard flesh. Not only is it the season of Halloween (and my wedding anniversary!) but every autumn Illustrator X and I always make a point to visit the annual Rock-n-Shock convention in Worcester, MA. For those who have never experienced the Rock-n-Shock, it’s the premiere convention for horror movie lovers in the Northeast. Greats of horror have been in attendance over the years, from the legendary George Romero, Julian Sands and Malcolm McDowell to some of today’s stars of indie horror, music, literature and comics.

The Running Man

The Running Man introduces us to Ben Richards, a young man living in 2025 who has been blacklisted and can’t find a job. Growing more desperate, with a sick infant daughter and a wife to take care of, he goes to the headquarters of the Games Network in hopes of landing a spot in one of their shows. While these shows offer a decent payment, they also offer disfigurement or death to the participants, all for the entertainment of the masses. Because of his intelligence, health, and blacklisted state Richards is slated to appear on The Running Man. He is sent out into the world with a twelve hour head start before hunters begin tracking him down. For every hour he stays alive, he earns $100. Viewers are encouraged to report sightings of him for a reward.

Movies You May Have Missed: Free Enterprise

Take one part Swingers, two parts Clerks, add a plethora of sci-fi references and you have 1998’s Free Enterprise, a funny, witty comedy starring Eric McCormick, Rafer Weigel and William Shatner.
Free Enterprise is the story of best friends Mark (played by McCormick) and Robert (played by Weigel) who are struggling to break into the movie business. Life gets interesting when they run into William Shatner, a man they’ve idolized since they were kids. As they get to know Shatner (thus, debunking their myth of the man) they realize they need to grow up. Things further escalate when Robert meets Claire, a beautiful comic book loving geek who takes up all of Robert’s time, putting his friendship with Mark and their movie career hopes in jeopardy.

Fiction Friday: Edgar Allan Poe

This week for Fiction Friday I’d like to highlight the author Edgar Allan Poe.

I know that this series is generally reserved for lesser known authors (and if you have a story you’d like to submit please send it on), but good old EAP deserves a bit of a mention this close to Halloween.

October is usually a time here at SFSN where we highlight the horror aspects of “stuff we like”, and Poe is one of the quintessential masters of horror. So I present to you a piece that I know you know. We all know it, it’s “The Raven”. What makes this version and this post so special is not the piece itself necessarily, but the presentation. After the jump, if you dare, find this most famous poem read by none other than John de Lancie. Can there be anything more chilling than Q reading certain doom?
