Talkcast 122: Robot God Akamatsu

Robot God Akamatsu

Tonight’s guests are Frankie B. Washington and James Biggie, creators of Robot God Akamatsu, a webcomic about super robot Akamatsu, who fights to save the world from giant monsters.  Most of the story takes place in New England, and SFSN listeners can get in on the action by voting on which city they want Akamatsu’s enemies to destroy in next week’s Facebook poll. A random voter will win artwork from Frankie and James!

The Travel Agent

Harris Tobias is an enigma in the world of indie writers. His Facebook and blogspot pages are rather cryptic. For a man who has written several novels and hundreds of stories, there is simply not much to find out about him.

This story, featured in Quantum Muse, is a variation on a theme:  a tale spinning through time, literally.  Myrna and Lester Crump need a vacation. Hearing from their friends about the wonders of a temporal trip, they come to pay a visit to Lorna Trabish to seek out the obscure and different…

TalkCast 119 – Nauticon

Nauticon

Our guests are Pam Larson and Mary Dumas of Nauticon, a 21+ Fanvention to be held in Provincetown, Ma., May 18-20. Nauticon is billed as an event where all fans of any type of fandom can attend and feel comfortable discussing topics of a more adult nature than is normally appropriate at general conventions. Also atypically, Nauticon doesn’t feel the need to pigeonhole themselves into a set theme, rather going with “cool stuff we like”. Pam and Mary also work on humongous events like Anime Boston, and are working on a bid for WorldCon in Disney World. As a side note, while on the show, Pam and Mary announced that they would nominate SFSN for A HUGO AWARD! Thanks guys!

Fiction Friday – Was it My Turn to put Out the Rats? by Timothy Goyette

“How do authors find their way to Fiction Friday,” you ask? Well, each one has their own road less traveled to Sci Fi Saturday Night and none more circuitous than this entry. A chance remark by one of the original hosts of the show to an acquaintance brought Timothy to us in a series of emails.  The course of the emails revealed any number of interesting coincidences to explore over the coming days, not the least of which was his website, Quantum Muse, a repository for a host of writers.

Timothy O. Goyette has lived in New Hampshire all of his life,  except for an 8 year stint in California.  Tim is the Editor of Quantum Muse a web zine with weekly flash fiction and monthly short stories in Science Fiction, Fantasy and Alternative.  It is also an online writer’s group. Some of Tim’s stories are in the collection: Quantum Musings.  Others are on the Quantum Muse site.  He writes both serious and humorous stories.

Animal right and animal testing takes a turn for the macabre and disturbing in a story of two girls and Mr. Whiskers in a somewhat foreboding future. Submitted for your approval is the second story featuring his characters Sasha and Katrina, Was it My turn to Put Out the Rats?

Fiction Friday – The Search For Intelligent Life by Leigh Lane

The mystery of Leigh Lane is manifold. Living in Montana with her family, she is a writer of dark fiction, reminiscent of some of the most fear-inducing science fiction ever written. She has a unique sense of pace and a quirky use of words and juxtaposition  that makes even the most simple and straightforward of plots and motivations twist and tumble. The  intelligence in her writing  is wonderful. This week’s Fiction Friday story is a selection from  Of Mind and Matter, a compilation of her short stories.

Submitted for your approval in its entirety, “The Search for Intelligent Life”.

TalkCast 117 – Ben Templesmith

Our guest is writer and artist Ben Templesmith. We reminisced about meeting Ben two years ago at Boston Comic Con, and his participation in our Jeanne Robinson fundraiser jam sketches. (Adding color isn’t cheating Ben!) We examined why 30 Days of Night (the book and/or the movie) didn’t feel like a huge career boost. Ben mentioned that Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse would definitely be continued, and when asked about his artistic inspiration, didn’t miss a beat in naming Ralph Steadman. Meet Ben in April, at Boston Comic Con.
