The Ten Doctors

As a diehard Dr. Who fan, I haven’t been too thrilled with the comic book spinoffs I’ve encountered.  Aside from a great story by Roger Langridge a few years back (and if anyone knows where I can find a copy of it, I’d appreciate it — I only read a few pages and own the art for the last page, but man it’s good!), they tend to hit the notes but miss the tune completely.  Something always gets lost when translating from one medium to another —– most comic book adaptations of film and television shows bear this out, and vice versa.  However, a friend of mine recently sent me a link to an online Dr. Who comic that has been blowing me away from the start (thanks, Scott!).  People, put down your work, your worries, your spouses and children and go to http://comics.shipsinker.com/2007/03/10/a-doctor-who-comic-the-10-doctors/ immediately! My Last Post For A While and BattleStar, The Big Finish

Second things first. I have resisted writing about the ending of BattleStar Galactica for a variety of reasons; first and foremost, I have viewed it 3 times now, and finally feel ready to give it some justice. So, here goes. It has been a good long time since any series had been so well planned out that the ending really does an amazing job of tying up every loose end and plot thread. Read More »

Good and Bad Robots, Watchmen and Television updates

Good Robot News:

Japan, defacto world leader in robotics has come out with a new model, Saya2. It is being field tested in classrooms in Japan as well as nursing homes. The robot is capable of 6 basic vocal and facial emotions, surprise, fear, disgust, anger, happiness and sadness, but still requires a human interface to control it. In fact it is really nothing more than an extremely updated version of Disney Anamatronics. Here’s the rub. Read More »

DVR’s-R-Us and The New Way of Viewing….Oh, and ST-TNG Reunion (of sorts)

It used to be that you watched a show. You sat down when it was on and FRICKIN WATCHED IT. Well, those days are long gone, so when Nielson Ratings come back, YOU KNEW who watched, the demographic breakdown and just where in the grand scheme of things you sat in relation to any other show. Technology changed all that, beginning with the home video recorder which began the time-shifting revolution, and then it went digital allowing DVR’s to store infinite programs for later viewing. Science Fiction – Science Fact: The God Particle?

Particle Physics is not my cup of tea by any stretch of the imagination, but just what is the “God Particle” why they are trying to find it and what its implications are for life as we know it are fascinating reading and so far into the realm of hard science that it rivals the best Asimov novel. Friday Night Report Card – What I Expected and What I Actually Saw

Hey kids! Time to take a look back at last Fridays Sci-Fi Bowl-A-Rama and see if it lived up to the hype. I was sitting, rapt with full attention, a 6 of Miller and Guacamole, Mango Salsa, intent on 3 hours of goodness. Read More »

Bare With Me On This

OK folks, I am seriously not making any statement in jest or mocking anyone here, so lets get that right out of the way first. This post defies any current category we have here on the site and probably belongs on the Science Fiction-Science Fact area (not built yet but  coming soon). But, to be honest, I am not sure if it even belongs here at all, but I am going to share a link with you all: Read More »

Lois Lane, Godzilla, and the Vibrator

One thing about being into comic books around the holidays; you know you’re going to get some pretty cool stuff.  Of course, most people can’t appreciate the subtle joys of a silly-string web-shooter or The Saga of Battlestar Galactica on vinyl, but who cares?  All you know is that you finally got that Emma Frost bust you’ve been eyeing for months now, and yes, feel free to make with the jokes.  Anyway, one tradition that’s developed over the years is that every Christmas and birthday, I buy certain friends back issues.  For Megan, it’s usually an old Lois Lane comic where she uses a robot or a werewolf or some kind of 30th century time-trap to get Superman to marry her; or maybe a Jimmy Olsen where he goes back in time to ancient Rome and starts the Beatles craze two thousand years early (no, I’m serious — that really happened in one of those issues.  Look at some of those old covers!).  My friend Randy is a diehard Spider-Man fan, and he loved the back issue I found introducing the Spider-Mobile — who wouldn’t?  This year, I found an old Amazing Spider-Man for him; it was a Stan Lee/John Romita issue, I think with the second appearance of the Shocker.  The Shocker, by the way, wears a big “V” belt buckle on his costume, so you’d think he’d be called The Vibrator or find another way to hold up his pants.   But I digress… Read More »

Why is Doctor Who Pissing Me Off?

Right off the bat, let me make one thing clear, I love this show. Its latest incarnations have been nothing short of fantastic. The scripts have been tight, the acting has been wonderful but best of all, this show has been like fine caviar, absolutely delicious in small doses, leaving you always wanting more. Far superior in every sense to the older Doctors(with due reverence),  these shows have let us move from beyond the cutesy and hokey into mainstream Sci Fi with a vengeance. One of the things that has been so wonderful is one of the writers’ better tricks, setting up an action many episodes before and then bringing it back to conclusion. I have been honestly stunned by some of their amazing plot tricks and as a consumer and viewer, more that satisfied. Read More »
