Open letter to FRANKIE B. WASHINGTON

Hey Frankie,

All of us here at Sci Fi Saturday Night were just marveling over the last unsolicited piece of artwork you sent our way, and looking at all the links and news items and Facebook posts you’ve shared with us; your great interviews and comics, and… uh… well, it’s… I guess we just have to come out and say it:

We love you Frankie.  And we want to have your baby.

The SFSN crew

PS:  It’s okay… we can live with my mother.

Why Is Jeanne Kietzmann Staring At You?

Ah, look at that beautifully pensive woman and in your heart you know it can only mean one thing; The BBC has a new Sci Fi drama coming out in the fall, doesn’t it? YES! IT DOES! Meet The Outcasts, an 8 part mini-series for the Beeb. Since the unprecedented world-wide response to Doctor Who, there has been a quiet rush within the BBC to bring new series like this up, and if they keep the same quality, this should be a goodie, indeed.

Staring Liam Cunninghanm, Amy Manson, Jamie Bamber and the aforementioned Jeanne Kietzmann, the storyline is an oldie but goodie (see other images here via Den of Geek). Think Earth 2, without the baggage that series brought along. What makes this interesting is the BBC way of doing this as a limited run. Notwithstanding the fact that a cross cast of British and American actors, Genre and General Actors, makes the mix mighty interesting, and then there’s Jeanne Kietzmann.

This is Dome, sayin’: Yeah, this is one I think I am really gonna look forward to…and then, there’s Jeanne Kietzmann.

DC Doing It Right – Batman: Under The Red Hood

As Marvel makes its mark in moves with big budget extravaganzas, DC has been very quietly putting out some amazing quality animated feature with some of the finest voice acting and scripts around. The latest in this series is Batman: Under The Red Hood.

The animation is quietly above par, giving a rich texture to the grimy underside of Gotham City and the rest of the Batman universe. Vaguely visually reminiscent of the many different comic incarnations, Batman comes across as a stunning, stark night creature, much more like a movie than a cartoon. When added to the rich voice characterizations and the very good score/soundtrack, this is a fun ride and frankly, you can’t ask a whole lot more from a super hero movie than that. That a review of a cartoon mentions the director is kinda funny, BUT the cut and feel of this is really good.

Directed by: Brandon Veitti

Written by: Judd Winnick

Voice Casting includes: Bruce Greenwood, Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Cole and Kelly Hu. Insane props to John DiMaggio as The Joker.

This is Dome, sayin: No spoilers……… but…..the last 10 minutes is…as The Joker says….”to die for!”

Spidey Resurrection or Broadway Turns Dark…..Again

Everything old is new again. Everything done is redone. Everything thrown into the dustbin comes back as a collectible. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark after many false starts, miss-steps and hiccups is set to open on Broadway in previews on November 12, 2010 at The Foxwoods Theatre (formerly the Hilton Theatre). Directed by Julie Taymor (The Lion King musical, Across The Universe), book  by Taymor and Glen Berger, music by Bono and The Edge and featuring visual effects from Cirque du Soleil, how can this possibly go wrong?

It’s easy. This production has been plagued by rumor, actor tantrums and every conceivable technical glitch known to live stage. Starring, at this moment,  Reeve Carney (Spidey), Jennifer Damiano (MJP) and Patrick Page (GG)… and the rest of the cast has not even been announced. What should be noted is that Alan Cumming and Evan Rachel Wood have withdrawn from the cast due to “scheduling conflicts”. Let’s not hold our collective breath on this one. Much as I adore Taymor’s work, this is just not something that’s  going to interest me at all.

This is Dome sayin’: Spidey deserves better…or maybe not. Has anyone thought of adding some sparkly vampires?

An Open Letter to Google

From: The Dome

RE: Google Wave

Dear Mr. Google

At our weekly staff meeting yesterday evening, we were informed by our resident technical wizard, Kriana, that sometime on or before December 31, 2010, Google in planning to discontinue support for Google Wave and discontinue the application. On behalf of the Cast and Crew of Sci-Fi Saturday Night, What The Hell? Google Giveth and Google Taketh Away?

For the clueless, Google Wave is was an amazing app that allows allowed people to collaborate in r/t on documents. For our purposes at SFSN, we use used it as a running show log. It served as collaborative workplace for our shows from our segment producers in the far reaches of the planet and on Saturday afternoons became a community story board to put the show together. While it might be feasible to find another application for our needs, Mr. Google, we were all very happy with it.

VERY HAPPY WITH IT!

I, The Dome, am officially asking you to license SFSN with the source code. What the hell, you’re not gonna use it any more, are ya? I am striking a blow for all the dying apps across the cyberverse, the ones that were loved, and used, and never given a chance to blossom and grow. What if Darwin had said, “Hey, nice crabs”, and moved on? What if Edison had said, “Watson, come here…” and forgotten why? What if……… arguh………..

This is Dome sayin’: Don’t tease me with apps that work and do exactly what they’re supposed to do…….and then take them away.
