Talkcast 27 – The Missing Man

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times:

Upcoming events:

It’s official: Harlan Ellison booked for May 29th!

Browncoats Redemption coming to GraniteCon Manchester on May 23rd.

May 8th, Robert Heinlein Retrospective featuring Spider Robinson.

In Movies some very interesting independent stuff.

Beyond The Iron Sky looks very intense. Piranha 3-D‘s director Alexandre Aja promises 3-D Double-D boobs and more bloody violence than Quenton Tarentino.IronMan has a new viral site.

In Genre Television:

Flash Forward continues to have great acting and scripts and shitty numbers and may not make the cut for next season. Chuck gets good numbers and lots of fun. Fringe has its best episode yet! Smallville returns; nothing happens. Are we surprised? Lost, is anyone still watching the Flash Sideways?

Some amazing  April Fools Web Jokes. The best ones we found were League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1988, Canned Unicorn Meat and Google Translate for Animals.

PKD’s (and David Mack’s) ELECTRIC ANT

The first issue of Philip K. Dick’s Electric Ant hit the stores this week like a psychic invasion.  Reading more like a copy of Heavy Metal than the latest release from Marvel Comics (which it is), Electric Ant hits all the right notes in introducing the reader to the mind of Philip K. Dick.  What a frightening, fascinating mind it is!

Review: The Orffyreus Wheel

Title: The Orffyreus Wheel

Author: David Niall Wilson

Format: E-book (epub format)

Summary: The Orffyreus Wheel is written around the historical figure Johann Bessler (1680-1745), or as he called himself, Orffyreus. Bessler was known for allegedly creating a perpetual motion machine in the form of a wheel. The story intersperses glimpses of Bessler’s life with the main plot surrounding his descendants and their recreation of his work and the consequences thereof.

The Good: The Orffyreus Wheel utilizes historic fact and intrigue a la The Da Vinci Code while maintaining a secular point of view. The plot alternates between action packed spy scenes and moral contemplation.

The Bad: The book uses almost every fact listed on the Wikipedia page for Bessler – perhaps not much more about his life is known, but it would have been nice to learn even more about him in the context of the story. The plot about his descendants seemed to end rather abruptly.

In Conclusion: A thoroughly entertaining read. I want a sequel.

Rating: 4.5/5 Pulsars

What Happened To Sarah?

What exactly is What Happened To Sarah? Visitors to www.whathappenedtosarah.com have been asking this question for over a week now, and the buzz is growing.  At first glance, it seems like a typical short sci-fi film:  a young woman wakes up, pads downstairs and down a hill to a lake where… something… is waiting for her.  What is it?  What happened?  There are damnably few clues.  And that’s the point of this film — we don’t know.  As a first chapter, it’s a great intro; you’re intrigued and want to learn more about this woman and what that… thing… is.  And no, it doesn’t hurt that we first see her (ahem) getting out of bed.  But the director seems to be taking great care to linger on seemingly innocent items, like a business card with… is that website info?  And Sarah’s college shirt — Thelema?  Is this a deliberate Crowley reference?   If so, it’s a welcome replacement from Miskatonic University, where every sci-fi fan of the past fifty years has apparently graduated from.  Speaking of references, people are already making comparisons between What Happened To Sarah? and Twin Peaks, or 2001: A Space Odyssey.  Myself, I am strongly reminded of the cult classic Picnic At Hanging Rock, in which three young girls disappear under mysterious and ambiguous circumstances.  Picnic At Hanging Rock is a film so good that it makes you like the Zamfir soundtrack, and there’s every indication that What Happened To Sarah? will follow suit.

Do yourself a favor and check out What Happened To Sarah? — and see where the mystery takes you.
