Dune Retrospective

Dune has a special place in my heart. I picked up the novel at just the right time, when I was starting to see the deeper machinations around the surface of things that happened in the world. I couldn’t have been better prepped for the series, and I devoured it. I have read the whole thing once a year since, and it usually takes me about a week. I hole up and just tear through it, enjoying the complexity and truthfulness of the writing. So when I recently decided to watch the Dune movie for the first time from beginning to end it was with the kind of trepidation that a true fan always has toward another take on a story they love. I knew the movie was bad, but how bad I didn’t know. I figured that, as with the Lord of the Rings movies and the Star Wars prequels, it was my job to know them. So I sat down with the movie Dune, and the miniseries Dune and Children of Dune, a few beers, and watched. Here is what I learned.

DVD Flashback: ZU WARRIORS (aka THE LEGEND OF ZU)

Title:  ZU WARRIROS (aka THE LEGEND OF ZU)

(2001)

Produced and Directed by:  Tsui Hark

Ever been to the fair?  A carnival?  The circus?  You’re treated to a dazzling spectacle, but you don’t exactly get to know the performers.  Same thing goes for ZU WARRIORS, a film by Tsui Hark, often described as the “David Lynch of Asian Cinema”.  More like the Blue Man Group of Asia, unless there’s an even longer version of DUNE out there that Alan Smithee wouldn’t put his name on.   Read More »

Syfy does Christmas, hijinks ensue

Photo: daemonstv.com

The one thing missing lately from the corporate and media three ring circus of consumerism that is Christmas, is quality TV Christmas specials. Standard shows have standard plots with a dash of gingerbread or a sprinkle of tinsel, but other than the oft re-run claymation specials, there’s just no pizzazz left in Christmas. That is– there wasn’t until Syfy came out with Warehouse 13 and Eureka Christmas specials.

SHATNERQUAKE: SHATNERTASTIC!!

Photo: amazon.com

Title: Shatnerquake

Author:  Jeff Burk

Format:  paperback

Oh… my… God.

Two days later, and my head is still reeling from this book.  Warring factions of Shatner fans facing off against “Campbellians” (they’re all missing their right hands; you do the math) in the mother of all conventions glorifying every single role that the Shat has ever played, sung, or stammered through.  The Grand Poobah of Starfleet himself is the star of this novella and his voice will speak to you  in that Shatnertastic affectation that haunts the dreams of millions,  as you read along and relive every Priceline Negotiator commercial you ever saw.   Your nights will be restless and fitful as Shat’s black and white face croons to you in Esperanto, but madness is a small price to pay as you get every single reference and in-joke in the book— and man, there are a TON of them.  It’s like reading a story in a code that only you and your friends can translate.
