The Space Catapult, rev.II

Those of you old enough or literate enough to remember Heinlein’s The Moon Is a  Harsh Mistress will be familiar with the concept of a space catapult to inject objects into low earth orbit from both selected areas on Earth and the Moon. Mike Holmes and Manny Kelley worked out the logistics many years before NASA in conjunction with then Martin Marietta developed the now defunct X-20  Dyna-Soar , a precursor to the Space Shuttle, a program now on its last legs.

NASA is now actively engaged in renewed research into using a catapult that launches a wedge aircraft with scramjets on a gas powered sled. Landing would be on a runway much like the one the current shuttle uses. Currently in the research stage, it fills a void left by the demise of the shuttle program and fulfills the dream of Mycroft Holmes.

Geekdom knows no boundaries. Yes, I have a Bajoran earring, a Harley Quinn Barbie Doll and the entire series of Models, Inc. the comic. As I said, geekdom knows no boundaries, but I do believe I have reached mine with this.

Eternal Image offers the Trek geek the empowerment of being buried in a Trek Coffin or having their ashes in a Trek Urn. Is this any worse than a KISS Coffin (also available)? Look, fandom is one thing. I will freely admit to having a more than passingly unhealthy attraction to obsession with Harley Quinn, but I wonder how my family might feel seeing a “United Federation of Planets” medallion on my headstone. Would the money not be better spent on a replica of Serenity?

You see, it comes down to this, I was raised with the notion of the one with the  most toys wins, and I have always followed this minor obsession. With the help and support of family and staff and a rigorous 12 step program, I am slowly coming to grips with…

This is Dome, sayin’: oh the hell with it, it’s only money.

The Return of Spider Robinson

Words fail me at the joy I feel in reporting that Spider Robinson has returned to public life. Since the passing of his beloved wife Jeanne on May 30, 2010, Spider has been in well deserved privacy. The loss of such a beautiful soul was crushing to many of us who only knew her from her writing and, I was lucky enough to speak with her briefly once. It was a moment I will treasure forever.

It is being reported that this month Spider will be making a few appearances in the Vancouver area in support of the arts and writers and he has resumed his podcasts which can be found here. On behalf of all of us here, welcome back.

Science Fiction – Science Fact – Da Bear

Since the days of R Daneel Olivaw, Asimov and many others have brought us a both interesting and frightening future which we will share with robots. Notwithstanding the pseudo-humanity element of intelligence offered by Asimov, Heinlein, and Skynet, the human condition has always wondered about 2 aspects, dating back to the Golem,

  1. Is intelligence (i.e., humanity) able to be replicated mechanically, and
  2. Can a mechanical framework be constructed to simulate a human being.

Behold BEAR, Vecna Robotics’ newest Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot (try not to think Terminator). To quote directly from Vecna’s website, “Whether on a battlefield, in a mine shaft, near a toxic chemical spill, or inside a structurally-compromised building after an earthquake, the BEAR can rescue those in need without risking additional human life” (try not to think John Connor). This unit is designed as their flagship for a series of Metal Battlefield Enhancements ( try not to think of anything) and to be used in many civilian and military settings. The HG2 hand can palm a basketball, be customized with specific tools (think Manuel Garcia Kelly). Its transport system has a capacity of 200-600 pounds with vibration and shock insulation. The WAM Arm is eerily reminiscent of a Waldoe.
