Another Peculiar August Update – Vlad Vaslyn

My Peculiar Family 2

My Peculiar Family 2

What if you could steal someone’s imagination? #Read @Vladvaslyn’s creepy gothic tale ONLY in the exciting #new #short #story collection, MY PECULIAR FAMILY II.

@Vlad Vaslyn recalls his peculiar experience writing “The Final Tale!”

Creativity is a blessing and a curse peculiar to humankind. Is there any other creature that displays such ability to wield the lightning of imagination? When an artist—painter, writer, sculptor, and so on—is blessed with the throes of creativity, it’s often a blissful and exhilarating experience. It can feel almost holy, and for most, the sacrifice of time, energy and emotion is well worth ceding a bit of one’s soul.

But there’s a dark side to creativity, too, as all adepts know. Consider the episodes of gloom and

crisis that can all too easily overwhelm, those moments when an artist feels that no matter his skill, his work is mediocre, and is therefore doomed. What happens when an artist just isn’t good

enough, when he fails, despite how badly he yearns, despite how he puts his craft above all else? What happens when the curse peculiar needles its way into his soul, and the ecstasy of creation is overwhelmed by the agony of mediocrity? It can lead to uncomfortable questions, soul-shaking questions, and the blessing of creativity can all too easily become a curse.

In “The Final Tale,” Andrew Lahr is a lonely young man yearning to become a writer of renown, but despite his love of storytelling, he consistently falls short of fulfilling his life-long dream. Destitute and on the verge of suicide, Andrew is at crossroads … until his mysterious uncle—a man known to dabble in strange magic—bequeaths Andrew with a gift that can unlock the power of not just his own imagination, but all imaginations. Andrew begins to grow into the writer he’s always desired to become, but his uncle’s gift exacts a price, and soon Andrew starts to wonder: has he been blessed, or has he been cursed?

My Peculiar Family 2

In this episode we are joined by author Vlad Vaslyn and artist, writer and coloratura soprano Karen Gosselin to talk about their contributions to My Peculiar Family 2, currently on Kickstarter.

Karen gets the chance to talk about how she has been with this project since the beginning and why she felt it was important to continue to Book Two.

Vlad, who has been so very helpful behind the scenes in the book, talks about the “exercise” aspect of these books and how it lets all the assembled writers work within the same project and have such wildly inventive and different story’s.

It’s a fun night with two of the shows very good friends.

Enjoy the chaos.

Meet My Peculiar Families John Valeri

John Valeri

John Valeri

A reclusive novelist has earned herself a cult following … The trouble is, she may not have ever published a damn thing.

#Author @JohnValeri talks about his peculiar story in the upcoming #short #story collection, MY PECULIAR FAMILY II:

“Writing “Publish/Perish” was a “peculiar” experience in that it elicited an overwhelmingly vehement response from the few trusted early readers who got a glimpse at the first half—more so than anything I’d shared previously. I was inundated with enthusiastic congratulations on my too-good-to-be-true book deal, tempered only by sympathetic commiseration over my impending divorce. While there are a few autobiographical elements infused within the story, neither of those occurrences happen to be among them. I’m still an “aspiring novelist,” and I’m still happily married. Guess I should have prefaced my submission with a precursor: This is a work of fiction. Live and learn, huh?”

TalkCast 386 – Skies Over Superior

Skies Over Superior

Skies Over Superior

A few months back, friend of SFSN Josh Dahl and I spoke at Plastic City Comic Con and he was super psyched to show me his newest comic collaboration, “Skies Over Superior”, a story about Merilee Fite, a young girl facing ghosts and monsters on the icy shores of Lake Superior. At the time I found the art and story both quite a departure from Josh’s previous work and commented on the stunning visuals. We decided he should come on and talk about it and the Kickstarter.

Well. joining the ‘cast tonight were supposed to be Josh Dahl writer  and Laura Bearl artist but as time drew near for the interview to begin we all became acutely aware that Josh was going to be unable to make the show and has in essence thrown Laura to the wolves. Laura, but being a trooper, she decided to carry on and we had a lovely conversation about her input into Skies Over Superior, how she and Josh met up to do this project, what her background is and the way her work is evolving since she moved to New England from Florida.

Harlan Ellison

Harlan Ellison

In our second segment we hit the wayback machine, to talk about Harlan Ellison. Harlan passed away a few weeks back and we took some time to look back at the interview we did with him over 8 years ago. As provocative and evocative an individual in death as he was in life, Harlan always created and provoked controversy. His is a voice that will be missed

TalkCast 385 – The Dystopian Worlds of Mike French

Fictional Alignment

Fictional Alignment

On this episode, we are joined by multi faceted human Mike French who comes by to talk with us about book two in his series dealing with the coming devaluation of humans ‘Fictional Alignment’. While this is the second book in the series, it does function quite well as a stand-alone (I know this only because I read book 1 well afterwards). We got a rare glimpse into the very “interesting mind of Mike and got the opportunity to talk on a multitude of subjects including:

  • His other works
  • His beginnings
  • His musses, both dark and otherwise
  • How he finds the time to write
  • What he both wrote and illustrated this current book
  • Why this series is a hybrid graphic novel
  • Why banking didn’t suit him.
  • What’s his favourite colour. (He’s British)(Actually never asked him that)(Probably should have)

Join in the lively conversation, or maybe just listen.

Enjoy the chaos.
