Douglas Clegg Boils Frogs, or, This is How Rumors Start

You know that “fun fact” about the frog in boiling water? The one where if you drop the frog into water that’s already boiling it will freak out because it hurts; but if you put the frog in cool water, then turn on the heat, the frog will calmly sit there and boil to death because it doesn’t notice?

I like my horror to be like the second frog. If a horror story needs to startle it’s audience to get a reaction, it’s just not a good story. Don’t get me wrong, surprises and gore and gripping moments are also key, but the mood of the story has to come gradually, so that the audience doesn’t notice until it’s too late to get out.

Douglas Clegg’s novel Neverland delivers just this kind of delicious slow horror. He moves his characters seamlessly from the everyday horror of a family falling apart to the supernatural horror of devil-worshiping children.  The child characters are refreshingly convincing, and Clegg falls into neither of the two most overused stereotypes in horror: the paragon of innocence that must be protected, or the adult/demon in a a creepy child’s body.

The real kicker of this book is its ambiguous nature. Good and Bad, Right and Wrong have no real place here. There is just the Bad Choice and the Worse Choice, giving the story a level of complexity that is utterly chilling.

Neverland is due to be released in May, but it’s available now for preorder through Amazon. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to put a library hold on one of Clegg’s other novels, because if they’re anything like this one, I’m an instant fan.

Dead Snow, More Snow then Dead

I saw Swedish Zombie film Dead Snow over the weekend. It was very slick, but I expected a lot more from it. Mostly I expected either more humor or more intensity – I was served neither. While it had moments, this one left the Dead Red Head…well…cold.

Thank you NetFlix or Why My DVD Collection is Growing

Saturday afternoon in the underburbs at it were, and I was heading back from a rousing round of Produce-O-Rama ant the local foodie-mart. When, to my surprise as I drove past the local Movie Store wearing a huge GOING OUT OF BUSINESS sign. A sign of the times, I am afraid, with so many different ways to deliver entertainment to your flat screen these days. What it did mean, however, was the possibility that if I took my time I might find a gem or 2, and a-hunting I did go. This is like a vast Yard Sale because what they tend to do is bring together the inventory from many stores and to my surprise, I found My Gem of the Day.

Many moons ago I had heard of a wonderful independent films called The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. This is an Indie throwback to any and every B movie, Sci-Fi  flick of the 50’s. It is strictly tongue in cheek, deliciously overacted and such wonderful fun, filmed in “SKELETORAMA” and sanitized for your protection. Folks, they wont make movies like this anymore. If you can find it, rent or buy it, but for goodness sake, get it and enjoy it.

If Kurt Vonnegut was a Romantic, or, Billy Pilgrim “with benefits”

No, it’s not a new movie but The Time Travelers Wife is really quite something…and therein lies the paradox. What is it? Is it truly science fiction, is it a romance or is it a horror story? I’m thinking the answer is yes; and here is why (and parenthetically why I adore this movie).

First however, a question to you, the reader. Why am I mentioning Vonnegut and this movie in the same breath? Two reasons actually. First, Vonnegut claimed amazement at the fact that he wrote Science fiction, claiming the he didn’t know he has until he saw one of his books in the Sci-Fi Section of a bookstore. The same holds true for this move, as it defies being put into any one genre and is very slippery to define it into any box. Secondly, the amazing similarities between Vonnegut’s Billy Pilgrim and Eric Bana as Henry is somehow both amazing and yet very different; amazing because they both have become “unstuck in time” and different because unlike Billy, Henry is not the main focus of the film, as very accurately implied by the title. Henry is, in fact, a catalyst for Clare’s adventures and the subsequent interplay with all the others in their universe. Read More »
