Welcome to 2016! In the last week Iran and Saudi Arabia have been at each other’s throats, the gun debate in the US has reached a tipping point, and North Korea has claimed a successful hydrogen bomb test. In celebration of the new year let’s take a look at a comic that also discusses new beginnings, and how the past continually haunts us.

Another is a horror mystery from Naoyuki Uchida, aka Yukito Ayatsuji, husband of Fuyumi Ono aka the author of The Twelve Kingdoms. Originally published as a novel in 2009 by Kadokawa Shoten, in three short years the book rocketed in popularity due to its frightening atmosphere and bizarre premise. The 4 volume manga, which will be the focus of today’s article, was serialized from May 2010 to January 2012 in the seinen magazine Young Ace and released as an omnibus in America under Yen Press. An anime soon followed from January to March of 2012, followed by an OVA in May 2012, and a live action film in August 20121.

Peace, Love, Superpowers.

Just Another SheepThe sixties was a decade of change, in some ways more obvious than others. One of those less obvious changes that you might not be familiar with is the emergence of super powers. Or, at least that is one of the many changes going on in the world Banning James, our young, shy and naive hero of Just Another Sheep, the latest new title from Action Lab Entertainment.

Just Another Sheep begins on July 3rd 1967 with a young man named Banning James is minding his own business on a bus to Boston when he is attacked for having a peace symbol on his backpack. While the timid  Banning is clearly not a fighter of any kind he has another unique way to deal with his attackers. Using his powerful telepathic abilities he is able to make his assailants experience the pain of a broken arm and food poisoning without even lifting a finger. Certainly not the most devastating way to use his power but that’s the point and one of the little details that help make Just Another Sheep something more than just another comic.

Keeping It Ghastly: Mantis Woman

“Keeping It Ghastly” is a bi weekly article on Japanese horror comics which have English print editions. Some are from famous authors, others are from unknowns and underground artist circles. Either way, it’s going to be to a terrifying/awesome ride to keep horror manga on our bookshelves!

In today’s search for the bizarre and obscure horror manga that have managed to crawl into the US manga market, I present to you Mantis Woman. This weird book is a collection of short stories akin to the R.L. Stine-esque books that we all read as kids and the camp legends that we all told our gullible younger tent mates. Writer and artist Senno Knife’s simple, if beautifully rendered, tales of possessed toys, creepy family heirlooms, evil substitute teachers and reclusive new neighbors aren’t going to keep anyone up at night hiding under the covers, but it’s still a fun read. Mantis Woman has a familiar charm to it that you’ll recognize as the same joy you get reading Weird US or re-watching Friday the 13th. It’s that same X-Files, Eerie Indiana, Supernatural season 1 monster-of-the-week formula where you know what’s going to happen and who’s going to die, but you just don’t care. It’s just too much fun watching a nuts-o family dressed in tiger print leotards chase petty criminals and bullies through a torture dungeon. Or learning how a gumball machine from Hell dispenses vengeful, wish granting kewpie dolls. Read More »

Keeping it Ghastly: Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service Omnibus vol 1

“Keeping It Ghastly” is a bi weekly article on Japanese horror comics which have English print editions. Some are from famous authors, others are from unknowns and underground artist circles. Either way, it’s going to be to a terrifying/awesome ride to keep horror manga on our bookshelves!

Very few manga have the staying power to remain in print format in the US. Sites like Crunchyroll cater to those who are looking for legally available licensed English translations, but with the legal grey area that surrounds scanlations and the many many sites that host them any company licensing a print version of a manga is making a huge gamble. Can they sell enough copies at Barnes and Noble or a local comic book shop to make their money back? And if a title is doing well in print can the individual volumes continue to be released, are new editions warranted or is an omnibus necessary? “The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service” is one such manga that has proven it can continue to sell both as individual volumes and as an omnibus. Why is this the case? Well, this week I intend to take a look at the appeal of The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service vol 1 omnibus and see what the fuss is all about. Read More »
