Talkcast 132 – Zack Kruse of Summit City Comic Con

Summit City Comic Con

This week’s guest is Zack Kruse, founder of Summit City Comic Con which takes place in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Summit City focuses mainly on artists and strongly supports the interaction of presenters in Artist’s Alley with guests. One of the ways they do this is by handing out “Con Bingo” cards. For each interaction on the card you can get a stamp at the corresponding table for completing it. Once the card shows “BINGO”, it can be turned in to be entered into a raffle for some fabulous prizes. Summit City also has some great activities specifically geared towards kids, such as a kids only costume contest and a kids’ comics workshop at the Allen County Public Library. Summit City Comic Con is May 12 at the Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Sky Pirates of Valendor Volume Two

Sky Pirates of Valendor

Sky Pirates of Valendor is a beautiful marriage of fantasy and science fiction elements that shouldn’t be ignored. If you have never heard of Sky Pirates or missed out on the first volume there is no need to worry.  The second volume does an excellent job of introducing itself and the previous story lines at the beginning and then dives right into the plot without skipping a beat.

Silver Vengeance by Kasey Shoemaker

Silver Vengeance

So here’s the story:  through no fault of anyone’s I got interrupted reading this book on 4 separate occasions and felt the need to retrace my steps when I started again. Why? It’s a complex read, and to give it justice you must immerse yourself in this reality. From the initial family turmoil, to the complex reality of adult Gabrielle Gayle’s life, Silver Vengeance is a story of coping with the hidden horrors of what you are and the reality that lies beneath the urban sameness we live in. It is a story of awakening for Gaby as she answers questions she has suppressed her entire life. Were-Witches (a chilling combination), boyfriends, family turmoil, and mother/daughter/sister issues all wrapped around the questions, “who am I? and what have I become?”

Urban Fantasy is becoming a more accepted mainstream genre. Kasey has a knack for juxtaposing gore and normalcy so that the mind is constantly asking more questions than the book answers…leaving the reader wanting more. She doesn’t waste words but instead gives the reader the chance to work with the story and paint pictures along with her. Reading about extraordinary circumstances in ordinary settings, I was left wondering what it is I miss in daily life that Gaby and other characters are forced to deal with every day.

Kasey introduces the reader to a new character and a new paradigm in urban fantasy.  When I was finally able, through no fault of the book, devote the time to reading this, I was deeply appreciative of the depth of her characters, the richness of her setting and its bloodthirsty under current marks this book as something special to read and look for more of. I heartily recommend it.

For the purposes of full disclosure, this book was a review copy sent to SFSN. No other remuneration was given or implied.

Talkcast 131: Norman Spinrad

Norman Spinrad

Tonight’s fascinating guest is Norman Spinrad:  author, essayist, and screenwriter.  Although he could not discuss his lost Star Trek script, He Walked Among Us, we could (and did) discuss his thoughts on the past, present, and future of the Sci-Fi genre. If you like what you hear, we recommend checking out Norman’s blog, which contains more of his thoughts as well as information about the digitization of many of his published works.

“The saddest day of your life isn’t when you decide to sell out. The saddest day of your life is when you decide to sell out and nobody wants to buy.”–Norman Spinrad

(Correction: On this podcast we mistakenly state that J.J. Abrams directed Wall-E. The film was actually directed by Andrew Stanton, but everything we said about it being awesome is still true.)

Summit City Comic Con Preview Event

The cultural context of comic books is never more relevant than when a crossover happens. When the stories that fill the glossy pages of our childhood move from print to film, or to the screens in our homes. Unlike the young upstart format of video games, there is no debate that comics are art. The pencil and brushes that create these masterpieces are making art with every panel. So when the directors of Summit City Comic Con decided to do an art show preview before the opening of the con it just made sense.

Displayed at Lotus Gallery were a number of original works and sequential pages of both popular and local artists. The show serves a reminder of the creativity and originality of the art that goes into the mythos of comics. It is a good reminder of the talent of the people who bring us stories of pain and glory, fall and redemption.

The Summit City Comic Con preview event runs on Saturday April 27th from 6pm to 9pm and Saturday April 28th from 12pm to 4pm at Lotus Gallery, 1301 Lafeyette St. Fort Wayne, IN 46802.
