It’s another two-guest show tonight! Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and publisher of Heavy Metal magazine, and Jeremy Bastian,  the creator of Cursed Pirate Girl join us to discuss their current projects, Justin Beiber, and their upcoming appearances at Boston Comic Con. We do NOT (*wink*) discuss Michael Bay.

Spider Returns

Spider Robinson

It is a wonderful day indeed when a fan gets the chance to meet an author, one on one, face to face. Well, if you are a Spider Robinson fan (if you read or listen to us you damn well better be) and you live anywhere near Vancouver, your pleas have been answered. Spider is going to be “Special Guest” at the  Fan Expo Vancouver and April 21, 2012. FEV is a new convention to Canada and Spider will be there, not on a panel but just to sit and chat and sign books. White Dwarf Books will have many of Spider’s books available for you to buy. Drop by, say hello, and get the chance to speak for a moment with one of the real gentlemen of Science Fiction. Tell him Sci Fi Saturday Night sent you!

Talkcast 128: Laura Ortiz, Corri English and Juli Mayers

Tonight we were joined by not one, but three guests!

Juli Mayers is a perennial Boston Comic Con fixture in Artist’s Alley. She is accepting commissions before and during the convention, and you can see her work on her Deviant Art page. Juli also draws the webcomic Wicked Unscripted.

Reprising her appearance last week, we also had the pleasure of speaking to Laura Ortiz, but this time she was joined by her equally fabulous Holliston co-star Corri English. (NB: Watch the premiere episode of Holliston before you tune in this week… spoilers!) Holliston airs on Tuesdays at 10:30 PM on FearNET, but if you and don’t get that channel (we don’t!), you can catch up on iTunes every Wednesday.

Talkcast 127: Laura Ortiz

Tonight’s guest is actress Laura Ortiz, whose first movie was The Hills Have Eyes and who has since done voice work for several productions including Robot Chicken and Horton Hears a Who. Laura’s latest project, Holliston is a horror sitcom on FearNet that premieres Tuesday, April 3 at 10:30pm EST/7:30 PST.  If the trailer is any indication, the show will include plenty of face peeling, scanning, and genuine humor.  Laura, since she’s SFSN’s new bestie, will be returning next week to discuss Holliston‘s premiere!

Talkcast 126: Tracy Hickman

Tonight’s guest is author Tracy Hickman, a long-time friend of the show. He tells us about his upcoming novel Wayne of Gotham, which will be released on June 26. Wayne of Gotham explores the backstory of Thomas Wayne and Tracy hints that what we think we know about Batman’s father may not be the actual story.  We also discuss story structure, copyright, and his tips for new authors. If you want to learn those things from Tracy himself, you can sign up for his online writing course. He revealed during the show that in addition to the current offerings, he’s going to start giving live webinars.  Thanks to Tracy’s generosity, SFSN listeners can get a 20% discount on his Writer’s Course, an Annual Subscription to  the Live Webinars, or to the Ultimate Writer’s Course (which combines the Writer’s Course and the Live Webinar subscription). The Soul Collector by Tracy L. Carbone

The Soul Collector

When a young adult “horror” book crossed my path, I was concerned. As I finished it I was surprised, and most pleasantly so. This isn’t a horror book in any sense of the word. The Soul Collector is a book about an young girl, American Stonehenge, alien presence and (just for good measure) divorce. At first, it seems like a lot is thrown into the pot but the reality is, this is a slick, fun read with engaging characters and an inventive story line. This book in some ways reminded me of The Goonies, but  it is also very reminiscent of Robert Heinlein’s early “juvenile fiction” in that it combines crisp storytelling with young characters in adult situations that have positive outcomes.

Talkcast 125: Tom Sniegoski

Tom Sniegoski

Tonight’s guest is author  Tom Sniegoski (Goodreads), whose diverse work includes comics, young adult novels, and adult novels.  He frequently collaborates with friend-of-the-show Christopher Golden. Tom is currently working on the 3rd book in his  series based on the Bone comics by Jeff Smith, and Bone: Quest for the Spark #2 is available now! He told us that the next installment of the Remy Chandler series is on its way, and we discussed the publisher model and why no one has read his hidden gem, Legacy.

Talkcast 124: Footloose and Guest-Free

TalkCast 123: John Palisano

Our guest this week is John Palisano. John is a writer, filmmaker, musician, and former Ridley Scott intern (with some great stories about his time in Hollywood). His novel Nerves is available now!

“Hall of Mirrors” by Fredrick Brown

Fredrick Brown was a master of short fiction. His quick wit and acerbic sense of timing made many of his stories timeless. It has been said that Philip K. Dick was a devotee of his writing and you can see many similar models in Dick’s work. His stories were the basis for many episodes of Star Trek-TOS, Blake’s 7, and The Outer Limits. Perhaps his most prophetic novel was The Lights in the Sky Are Stars, a poignant story of an astronaut begging Congress to refund the Space Program (sound familiar?).

This door has a time lock set to open in one hour. For reasons you will soon understand, it is better that you do not leave this room before then. There is a letter for you on the desk. Please read it.

Thus begins the tale of a man transported into his possible future. Written in 1954, this is a story of time travel and a historical look at how we thought our world might be today.

Submitted for your approval, “Hall of Mirrors”:
