RIP Al Williamson

Al Williamson passed away earlier this week, and we are all poorer for it.  To mention his name is to evoke images of lush landscapes, chiseled heroes, needlenosed rockets and snarling dinosaurs.  His Weird Science and Weird Fantasy comics for EC were as significant to the genre as Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon (a series he took over in the 1960s) and Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone.  Think of Anne Francis in a bathing suit, riding a velociraptor out of a ruined city of Mars — that’s Al Williamson for you.

I got to meet Al once.  I think it was ten years ago, and I think it was Pittsburgh, but it was definitely Al Williamson — there in the flesh, with a stack of original Secret Agent X-9 pages for sale which I stupidly did not mortgage my house to buy.  I did pick up a gorgeous print and asked him to sign my Superman #400, the only book of his I’d happened to have on me at the time.  He started to put pen to paper… and then his hand started shaking.  He stopped.  Started again… and stopped.   He cursed, looked up at me and said “I just can’t do it anymore”.

My heart shattered.  It was like Beethoven telling you he never heard his 9th symphony because the ringing in his ears drowned it all out.  In a distant voice I told him that it was alright and reached for my comic, but he waved me back, in that way that only angry old men can do.  He focused himself for a second, squinting… and signed the comic.  Then he took his print out of my hands and signed that, too.  “There you go”, he said.

I remember gushing thank-yous at that point and telling him how much his work meant to me, and I remember him barely acknowledging my words; bitterly turning his head away.  It was AWFUL.  Eventually I finished stammering out whatever I was saying and backed away.

I’m glad I got to meet Al Williamson for the briefest of moments and got to thank him for all that gorgeous artwork.  But I wish I’d never asked him to sign my comic.

Rest in peace, Al Williamson.  You’ve earned it.

Hey Look – Is that The Dome in Space?

Indeed it could be. A new NASA promotion will allow you or me or anyone to put their name or likeness in space on one of the remaining 2 shuttle missions. By going here, it gives you all the directions to have a likeness of you and your puppy, Waldo,or whatever on a selected mission. When the mission is completed, you return to the site and print off a certificate signed by that mission’s commander. I have a particular picture of myself and Jeri Ryan I am submitting. I figure me and 7 of 9 together in free fall is more than one can dream of, except if you are a spaceflight fanboy….like me.

Talkcast 37 – 664 an innocent number, or is it?

Our show tonight begins with a look back as we say farewell to Jeanne Robinson. Joining us is George O’Connor, Producer/Director of the hilarious web series 664 – Neighbor of the Beast. In the first segment we talk about the ending of a shining star in our universe,  Jeanne Robinson and what having known Her and Spider has meant to all of us on the show. To lighten the tone we also take some shots at ABC, and the alleged rumor that Dennis Hopper spurred on UFO research with his inclusion of a scene in East Rider. The second half of the show is spent with George talking about his web series 664, how it began, where it is now, and where its going in the coming months. As is custom here at SFSN, no bloggers were hurt during the recording of this program. Enjoy!

Torchwood Revisited

Its been almost a year since I was angry at Russell T. Davies for what he did to Torchwood in Children of Earth. I was resigned to the fact that the very high rated arc was not going to find a new home and I almost laughed when FOX showed any interest in it, eventually letting it drop.

Well, Jack Harkness fans and Gwen detractors unite. It seems as though STARZ is willing to give Torchwood a home and because it is a premium pay network, all the taboo’s are gone. This does not bode well. Torchwood always skated a very fine line and it was that thin line that made it so good, even at its worst. With a lack of compass as to what one is able to do, I worry the character of Jack will be lost in what can only be called his amorality. The new series is set to debut  simultaneously on BBC One and STARZ next summer, so all we can do is wait… and hope.

Farewell Jeanne

In all the time I have written here, this is perhaps the most difficult post I have ever done. This afternoon Jeanne Robinson, gifted author, dancer and wife of Spider Robinson died. We here at SFSN had a chance to speak with Spider and Jeanne last month and were deeply affected by the love and care in their hearts for each other.

For one of the few times, I can remember I am at a loss for words. I leave you with these thoughts . Spider, our thoughts and prayers are with you and Jeanne always. Shared pain is lessened; shared joy, increased — thus do we all refute entropy.
