TalkCast 415 – The Magnum Opus of Artemis Crow

Artemis Crow

Artemis Crow

In this episode we get to talk with writer Artemis Crow about the beginning or her grand adventure omnibus of novels ‘The Zodiac Assassins’. This series of books will encompass 12 novels and 12 novellas in a sweeping arc of the universe that has a world much like the one we all know called The OverWorld and a place of magic, mystery, mayhem and violence called InBetween. The series explains how one world became two and brings the reader back and forth between interactions between these worlds.

Artemis is our guide (especially mine) in gaining the understanding as we talked about her first book in the series, ‘Lyon’s Roar’ and the significance between the roles of the novels and novellas in this ambitious series. Maintaining characters in both human and “paranorm” form, this is a complex and compelling universe build with a depth and edge rare in a series that somewhat defies a genre or tag. It becomes a thrill ride with jarring and unexpected twists, which become more complex, compelling and baffling the deeper you become immersed in the overall story,

TalkCast 414 – It’s All About The Sauce

Rob Watts

Rob Watts

When you play “Three Of These Things Belong Together”, there is an obvious forth that doesn’t belong. So, if I were to list:  Horror Writer, Stainless Steel Design and Fabrication, Self Help Writer and Hot Sauce Inventor they would All apply to our guest and great friend of the show Rob Watts…except that you would have to add amazing musician, artist, chef, children’s author and composer of the Opening Theme to Sci Fi Saturday Night. The cool thing is we got to talk about almost everything on the list in this expanded episode.

Rob’s work as a writer of suspense thrillers is where we first got to know him

Charms

Charms

and his latest book of stories ‘Charms’ is one of his finest to date. Robs way with words and characters leads the reader down the primrose path to terror yet again without the need for gratuitous gore and violence. His stories are finely crafted pieces of emotional machinery that take you to many different places, all with the single intent of watching the bloody Jack In The Box rise up and scare the hell out of you.

Book Signing 101

Book Signing 101

After spending time also talking about The Stainless Steel Guys, his revised writing process and the state of Nobel Prize Winning Writers in Iceland we got the chance to talk about his book for writers ’Book Signing 101’. This book is specifically written for writers to help them as they venture out into the world of book signings and conventions. Written in a wonderfully relaxed narrative style, it helps anyone manage the pitfalls off all such public events.

Mr. Watts is a fun guy to interview, an amazing writer and a great friend of Sci Fi Saturday Night. Welcome, Rob, to The Five Timers Club. Mr. Simon will get you your jacket.

TalkCast 413 – Just Another Day in Plastic City

Not Keith Gleason

Not Keith Gleason

Our guest is Keith Gleason, a man with many hats. Keith is the driving force behind Plastic City Comic Con, a one-day micro-con with delusions of huge (Dome, please see the editor about this sentence). He also runs Reckless Sidekick Productions and is also the producer of Mighty Mascots, which just got picked up by Alterna Comics, and we somehow tricked him into talking about it under the guise of wanting more information about the conventions

Speaking of more information about the Plastic City event, we got to talk about the two guests of honor, Larry Hama and Barbara Friedlander. We also

Also Not Keith Gleason

talked about the concept of a small intimate convention in the Wallace Civic Center and how the two ideas merge into a wonderful Family Friendly event with free parking and an entrance fee of $ 5.00 with kids 12 and under free. The guest list is impressive with a wide array of artists, writers and vendors.

Micro Cons come and go but this one is going to be around for years because they have a very clear mission statement:

Keep costs low for both the vendors and the attendees so that everyone comes out a winner!

TalkCast 412 – Two Five Timers Enter The Podcast…

The original name for this show was “It’s Wrestlemania at the North Pole, Free Comic Book Day AND GraniteCon 2019 Preview” but it was too long.

The Double Midnight Gang

The Double Midnight Gang

Our first guest is Chris Proulx, owner of Double Midnight Comics, the comic store voted “Best Of New Hampshire”. We talked about two things…May 4th’s Free Comic Book Day and a very early preview of Granite State Comic Con 2019

Our second guest tonight is once again the prodigious and prolific

George O'Connor

George O’Connor

George O’Connor came by to talk about some stuff he has once again done. Included in the wonderful rambling were his current Kickstarter for “The Complete Graphic Novel starring Santa – Silent Knight”. As usual the discussion then meandered into why he was in Florida, his vacation “issues” and Domes confusion about his amazing guitar work in the Metal Band Swarm of Eyes. We did forget to talk about the current output of alfalfa in Central California, so we will be sure to have George on again very soon.

TalkCast 411 – Jeff Deck Ports In Again

City Of Games

City Of Games

On this edition of Sci Fi Saturday Night, the author of ‘The Shadow Over Portsmouth’ series Jeff Deck returns to talk about book two City Of Games. We got to talk about a ton of different things about the new book, the overall series and his consumption of caffeine in the writing process.

Much as the first book, this is another character driven story in the series that just continues to work very well. Part missing person, part sci fi adventure, part good cop, bad cop, badder cop, the book is unique, his style is unique and the series thus far is a wonderful

TalkCast 410 – Matt Spencer Is An Interesting Place

Matt SpencerIn this edition of Sci Fi Saturday Night we explore the many worlds that is Matt Spencer: Journalist, a New Orleans restaurant cook, factory worker, radio D.J., playwright, actor and…if we are to believe his ramblings, a writer.

We explore Matt on the basis of his short story collection ‘Story Time with Crazy Uncle Matt’ and get the lunatics eye view on some extremely original and fascinating material. In all seriousness, Matt has a very specific viewpoint. See if you can figure it out because, while I was unable to, his writing is infectiously exciting and a lot of fun.

Enjoy the chaos.

interesting  part of the comic community in New England and a good friend. From our first visits to the former Boston Comic Con and Granite Con, Rich was always there with fresh visions and amazing work. Over the years his influence and productivity has grown. We got the chance to talk with him about his beginnings with Johnny Raygun, his amazing body of work and some of his current projects including his wonderful new parody, Spaceforce, The Electric Black with Joe Schmalke and his upcoming Kickstarter for Sgt. Werewolf.

It was like sitting down and talking again with an old friend, which is exactly what it was.

TalkCast 408 – A Series Of Fortunate Events or Alvin Baylor Lives!

Alvin Baylor Lives!

Alvin Baylor Lives!

This episode is actually two stories in one. One is the obvious part. Alvin Baylor Lives! is a fascinating well-constructed Sci Fi novel/audio book set in the far future with McGuffin after McGuffin to keep the reader/listener enthralled. One the one hand, charming while at the same time gritty, we learn about the world that Alvin inhabits, the society he survives in and the profound affect one man can have.

The other story is about two boyhood friends, Maximillian Gray and Josh Horowitz. After surviving the “rigors” of public education together in the Greater LA Area, they went their separate ways as often happens. Max and Josh both found themselves in the entertainment industry and a chance social media reconnection brought them back together for this project: Max as writer and Josh as audio book creator.

So, this episode is two fascinating stories. One is about a book/audio book and the other is the rekindling of a friendship to create it. It’s a really cool story with two really eloquent interesting men.

Enjoy the chaos. We did, for sure.
