Keeping It Ghastly: Blood Sucker – Legend of Zipangu Vol 1

“Keeping It Ghastly” is a bi weekly article on Japanese horror comics which have English print editions. Some are from famous authors, others are from unknowns and underground artist circles. Either way, it’s going to be to a terrifying/awesome ride to keep horror manga on our bookshelves!

Resurrected three centuries after his defeat at the hands of the samurai Naonosuke, the powerful vampire Migiri has reasserted himself as a fearsome enemy of humanity. With his cult followers, Migiri, now “Yato no Kami”, has once more begun to spread the plague of vampirism across Japan. Battered but unyielding, covert agents have enlisted the help of ex-criminal Yusuke to help them take down Migiri. Yusuke, however, is only interested in the fate of his love Kikuri who was taken as the bride of the vampire lord. Illustrated by Aki Shimizu (Qwan and Suikoden III) and written by Saki Okuse (Flowers and Ghost Talker’s Daydream), Blood Sucker: Legend of Zipangyu was originally published by Gentosha from 2001-2007 before being licensed by Tokyopop in 2006. Currently there are no plans for a new edition of the series, so this is a used-copy only comic.

TalkCast 308 – Christopher Golden and Rob Smales

Christopher Golden

Christopher Golden

It’s hard to describe what went on during this podcast, but lets try. Our first guest was Christopher Golden, one of our absolute favorite people to have on (Trivia: His first appearance was TalkCast #15) . He talked about his participation in our Kickstarter project, “My Peculiar Family”, his particular reason for James A. Moore and himself to write their story they did together. The we talked bout his new anthology “Seize The Night” that books nomination for a Stoker Award, his travel for the coming year and …..potty etiquette in public restrooms including the ubiquitous concept of Bathroom Stall Yoga (I have been banned from putting a link here, use your imagination).

Our second guest, Rob Smales came back to Sci Fi Saturday Night to talk about his new anthology “Echoes of

Rob Smales

Rob Smales

Darkness”. This anthology covers the span of Rob’s writing career. In an interesting moment almost the entire cast centered on a single work in this book, Death of the Boy, which in some way affected all of us during the reading. We talked about how he feels looking as some of his very early work side by side with his newer stories, how he might seem them differently now and talked about Rob’s writing process. In the midst of this conversation we again drifted into ubiquity and somehow ended up on the subject of The Smell of The Post Office… Yes, That’s right.
