TalkCast 499 – Plato’s Republic On the Moon and DragonCon

Garon Whithed

Garon Whithed

One might reasonably ask what these two things have in common?  The quick answer is of course Garon Whited. The not so quick response is also Garon Whited. Garon and The Commander talk about one of his hard SF books, Luna. and its roots in Plato’s republic and Lord of the Flies and seem to have a genuinely good time in paralleling the origin of the hero quest from Joseph Campbell. The conversation then moves into the commercial as Garon gets to discuss his “day one exploits” at DragonCon and expectations there. Ever the pithy conversationalist, Garon never fails to entertain.

TalkCast 498 – Once Upon A Time In Dystopia

newpkdlogoDan Abella joins us once again to talk about the Philip K Dick Science Fiction FIlm Festival to be held at the Producers Club Theater and Cinema In New York City on September 17,18 and 19. As usual we have no idea where the interview is going to end up because that’s how it goes whenever Dan is on the show and that’s just fine. We did however get a chance to discuss a bit of back history of the past years lockdown and what it meant to the festival and how it affected this tear in terms of both physical events as well as the types of films that came to the table.

You can find the list of Friday, Saturday and Sunday events and times here but what is as important is the texture and flavor of the events, both in person and virtually. This year is an especially vibrant year for content and the  participants ability to access and interact with it. Enjoy the wonderfulness that is PKD

Talkcast 497 – GraniteCon 2021 Preview & WL Hawkin Returns

logoWhat Do GraniteCon and Paranormal Romance Have In Common? Why, it’s Sci Fi Saturday Night , of course! New England is so very lucky to have a Granitecon this year. We get a few moments to talk with Chris from Double Midnight Comics to get an overview of what we can expect from this years event.

W.L. Hawkin

WL Hawkin

Then, W. L. Hawkin returns to talk about how nice she is to the podcast.  We talk to her about reading her series of books backwards, The Hollystone Mysteries To Render A Raven. It’s a series of simply fascinating stories about her book, her work, her life, a lighthouse, fairyboats, a pod of dolphins and an invitation to join her on a yacht, which I am taking her up on as soon as I can.

Wendy Louise Hawkin is a truly original writer and  great fun to talk with and we hope to listen to as well.

Enjoy!

TalkCast 496 – More Tales From The Haunted Bank

199958956_1445073269164120_7280946475439846525_n

Kathrin Hutson

What a pleasure it is to have Kathrin Hutson back with us again. She returns to talk about book two in her Accessory to Magic series, The Cursed Fae. When last we spoke with her is was to kick off this series and we got our introduction to the magical underground world of Denver and met semi-reformed felon Jessica Northwood as she began her life after jail as an apprentice in the magical bank of Winthrop and Dirledge as an apprentice with no real thought as to what she might be getting herself into other than day to day survival.

In book two, we find her as the “Guardian” of the bank without really knowing what that actually means and finding herself more “learning on the job” more than anything else. Part snide asides between her and the sentient portion of the bank and the interactions with the rest of the magical Denver underground, book two of this series barely takes a breath from where book one leaves off and propels you forward with snarky elegance and eloquence from brick walls to blind alleys and back again and a wonderfully frenetic pace that makes you wish for the opening paragraph of book 3…. And so we do.

Enjoy the conversation

TalkCast 495 – A Cat On The Cover Always Sells Books

Edward-Willett-New-Headshot-696x872In this Cast we get to again speak author Edward Willett about his latest “juvenile” SF thriller Star Song; the adventures of Kriss, a young orphan boy, his off-worlder girlfriend Tevera and his touchlyre. One might rightfully ask , just what is a touchlyre, what  does it do, where does it come from…. and these are all good questions, many of which may be answered in the course of Kriss’ adventures with a spacefaring nomadic group known as The Families as well as a number of nefarious characters in the backstreets of the spaceports as well as his “mysterious benefactor” Andru. It’s an interesting adventure set in the far future and as Edwaed tells it. Well over 30 years in the making from first inception to final draft for him to be comfortable with the outcome of it. The story of how it came to be is as interesting as the novel itself. Enjoys the stories within stories within stories as much as we did.

TalkCast 494 – Not To Be Confused With Garfunkle and Oats

Angela Yuriko Smith

Angela Yuriko Smith

Never in the course of a Cast  have I ever said “can I say something about that ”

Scot Noel

Scot Noel

more times that in this episode and I’m not sure why other that I think Commander Cam and I adore these two folks very much. In this episode we are so pleased to welcome back Scot Noel from Dreamforge Anvil and introduce Angela Yuriko Smith from  Space & Time Magazine.

We get to talk to Scot about the metamorphosis of Dreamforge and how it is evolving into Anvil and what exactly that means to its online status as well as to its print incarnation. Then we talk with Angela about Space & Time  Magazine and how she came to become involved with it , what it has become for her and the wonderful re;ationship that has evolved between her and Scot that includes the publication of Worlds Of Light and Darkness.

As was stated during the ‘cast, there is a level of oddness that must be appreciated and not to be confused with Garfunkle and Oats. We all did  and hope you will too.

TalkCast 493 – Vampires in Australia?

Anna J. Walner

Anna J. Walner

In this episode we get to meet author Anna J. Walner as she introduces her new series, Garkain, Book One of the Ulura Legacy. In this first book we meet Amelia, a woman of extraordinary gifts who is learning about herself in many ways. As she explores her lineage she begins to realize it is not in Texas but draws her back to the Australian Outback where she learns of her true past as part of a hidden Vampire enclave which goes back generations: who she is, what she is how she  got there and what is is about to become is slowly pealed back to heroes stunning detail as her heritage is revealed to her as well as the alternate history of this enchanted past which also explains her own past while revealing the paths of her  future. We also got more than a glimpse of the semi-autobiographical areas of this novel as Anna talked about all the areas in which she and Amelia were so very similar. The structure and narrative of the book is very free flowing and quick so the reader is never grind down and it is a very clever read. Its use of both vampires and werewolves existing within current society is jarringly effective.

Enjoy the conversation. Now join us for a snack of pickles and a game of Ognib!

TalkCast 492 – Deus Ex Machina For Beginners

Garon Whited

Garon Whited

In this Cast we bring you the very funny and interesting author Garon Whited to talk about his very odd and interesting book, Dragonhunters. Garon not only proved to be an interesting conversationalist but was just fun to talk to. The Commander and I had the chance to delve into his past works for a bit as well as to talk with him about his style, where it comes from and why he has come to write the way he does. It turns out that Garon writes a lot like he thinks so  this conversation is very indicative of his books, fun and free wheeling.

Enjoy The chaos as much as we did!

TalkCast 491 – Delta Variant Pez Dispensers for Jennifer Anne Gordon

The key phrase in tonight’s show seems to be ‘My Banter is Bad” as we talk about Jennifer’s latest “horror”book Pretty/Ugly and peoples attempt to pigeonhole the genre. We also got the chance to talk about her style of writing which puts the reader between two railroad tracks and keeps the main characters  careening on both rails as you bounce from side to side. It makes for a chaotic ride as the reader learn about the broken lives of Sam and Nicole. If you believe you can’t care about a broken person, you may well be wrong.

We also got the chance to chat with Jennifer about  her first live book signing in July at Gibsons in Concord NH and what it felt like to have the world opening back up again as well as some of her upcoming appearances later on including The Goblin King Ball, The New England Crime Bake and The Upper Valley Comic Expo. Nothing but good things are happening for a wonderful writer and great friend of Sci Fi Saturday Night and we wish her well.

P.S. Don’t forget your Luxardo Maraschino Cherries
