The Summer of Our Contentedness

Move over Shakespeare and Steinbeck, after a discontent winter (can anyone say, “Skyline”?), we are quickly approaching what has all the trappings of being a dynamic summer of Sci Fi Movies. Yet both the media and blogosphere are abuzz with general  suck y attitudes, fanboy complainers, and bad vibes aplenty. Well, Dome is here to tell you, I for one am gonna enjoy what I am now crowning:  2011 – The Sci Fi Summer of Fun, and here is why:

May:

Thor

Hell and Yes. Under-rated and almost ignored by the media. Is there a movie Natalie Portman isn’t drop dead beautiful in? Or was that Chris Hemsworth? Thor 2 was just greenlit, even before it’s release.

Kung-Fu Panda 2

Featuring the voice talents of Angelina Jolie, Jack Black and Jackie Chan, this promises funny summer silliness.

June:

X-Men First Class

Matthew Vaughn directs this prequel and despite all the groaning from the Marvel-ettes, I think this could be good. Jennifer um January Jones, Kevin Bacon, Micheal Fassbender, James McAvoy  and the original story by Bryan Singer. This is a classic retelling of how the zebra got his stripes. It should make for good Saturday afternoon viewing.

Super 8

Part homage, part flashback, part Goonies, part Close Encounters, this summer fare by JJ Abrams and Spielberg has the chances to do a slick alternate history rewrite for us and I am in for the game.

Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds has been the moving target for this project for almost two years. The stills released and trailers look more than acceptable. It’s about time DC did something for Hal Jordan. Plus, there’s the really adorable video of Ryan Reynolds reciting the Green Lantern oath for a young fan, which ups the awesome quotient just by existing.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Do you really need a reason? Do you?…DO YOU? No real reason this is in here, except I cannot wait!

July:

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

One name says it all for this film, Megan Fox…I mean NIMOY!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

I’ll bring the cake, you bring the flying broom; only muggles are going to miss this. There were some bumps along the way, but this has been an amazing franchise and it is kind of sad to see it end.

Captain America – The First Avenger

Yes, Yes, and HELL YES. This is the movie of the summer and I am staking my reputation (such as it is) on it. This is the one I am anxiously awaiting. The saga of Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, should bring the cycle back to the beginning of the Avengers and usher in a new wave of some of the best Comic Heroes ever. An amazing cast include Hugo Weaving, Stanly Tucci, Tommy Lee Jones and Dominic Cooper. Based completly on word of mouth, we can look forward to Capt. America 2, they have already begun scripting it.

Cowboys & Aliens

007 does Roswell in Tombstone. As Stan Lee would say, “’nuff said”.

August:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

James Franco, John Lithgow and Sonja Bennett. OK, so there might be one or two I can plan on missing and I think this is one of them.

Conan the Barbarian

And I think this might be the other…

This Dome, sayin’: Enjoy The Sci Fi Summer of Fun. Let us know what ya think along the way. If I missed one of your faves or bombs, well… it’s just my opinion, lets hear yours.
