Movies I Wish You Had Seen – Repo Man

Repo Man

Once upon a time there was an old man named Bud who repossessed cars with his young protégé, Otto. This movie is an all time lost classic smokescreen of a science fiction movie. It is an absolute chameleon movie, part coming of age, part moral tome on the society of 1984, part car chase, part crime drama all wrapped around one key concept: wtf is in the trunk of that 1964 Chevy Malibu?

If you’re a fan of retro-drama, this is your movie. Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez are the most unlikely buddy team since Boris and Natasha. And quite frankly, they’re funnier. Alex Cox has created a moment in and out of time, at the same time, time-wise, if you get my drift, and I’m not sure I do.

This movie has a lot to offer the unwary viewer:  nukes, aliens, time travel, government conspiracy, punk rock, LA, UFOs, and the typical teen angst that accompanies any Emilio Estevez movie. Chock filled with comedy, satire, violence, sight gags (including the end credits), and music that includes Iggy Pop, The Ramones and Black Flag.

This is a movie that ages well. While it may not be as relevant as it was in 1984, it is still a cult classic in the best sense of the term. Eat the FOOD. Enjoy the story as it spirals out of control and the morality tale it portends to preach. Or…….just watch it and enjoy. I did. Over and over again.

  1. Morality tale? Mindfuck is more like it! This is one of the all-time great cult classics — arguably up there with Evil Dead II, Heavy Metal: The Movie, Forbidden Zone and your favorite flick that only you “really” understand. Also one of the all-time great soundtracks, although this is the L.A. punk scene, Dome — the Ramones are nowhere to be found. But who cares when you’re going over the guardrail at 210 mph listening to “Pablo Picasso”, “Institutionalized” and “T.V. Party”? This movie only gets better with age. So many classic quotes… I’ll never look at a plate of shrimp the same way again. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s one of the most quotable movies of all time. I’d PAY to see this with a Rocky Horror style audience who knows it as well as I do. It’s true, one of THE ALL TIME best soundtracks of all time (speaking of Rocky Horror), almost to the song! Whatever happened to Emilio? What happened to Tracy Walter? What happened to Dick Rude? I wanna be a Repo wife! I know what happened to Alex Cox, he now writes comic books! I just love all of these freakin’ melon farmers….(if you’ve ever seen the movie on tv, you know exactly what I’m talking about)…
