Mod madness! JFK-a-Go-Go!!

Hey hey!  Illustrator X here with news of the best single issue to come out in 2008!  Yeah yeah; it’s only been a few weeks, but I doubt there’ll be anything to top this.  I refer to the Teen Titans “Lost Annual” — the best superhero story I have read in ages.  This is one of those rarities, a well-written, well-drawn comic that really is for all ages.  For those of you only familiar with the cartoon series, the Teen Titans actually started out as a DC Comic series back in the 1960s, with many characters such as Robin, Beast Boy, the Mad Mod, etc. surviving into today’s toons.  This one-shot takes place back when the comic was first printed in the early sixties, involving Beatle-suited aliens kidnapping JFK to lead them against an invasion of afro-monsters.  When was the last time you read a comic that even sounded half as fun?  If the script weren’t groovy enough, the art is perfectly rendered by the dream team of Jay Stephens (Atomic City Tales) and Mike Allred (Madman, X-Statix).  Never have two styles so perfectly complemented the other, recreating the defining DC look of the early 1960s.  And, just to send you over the edge, the annual wraps up with a sketchbook from Nick Cardy, the original artist for the series (oh, did I mention that this was written by Bob Haney, the original writer from back in the day?).  Dig it!

Another great comic to debut this week was BPRD: 1946.  If your only exposure to the world of Hellboy was the movie, then this is a perfect jumping-on point; exploring the formation of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Development in postwar Germany.  Atmospheric, moody, and enjoyable as all-hell.   Also, this supposedly dovetails into the new movie Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, so pick up your copy now to catch all those pithy nuances.
